Suspected human traffickers arrested in Floyd County
Around midnight on Saturday, Floyd County Sheriff Deputy Daniel Spain spotted two vehicles traveling together and speeding along U.S. 70.
When Spain tried to pull the lead vehicle over, he said the second vehicle cut him off, almost running him off of the road.
Deputy Spain said when he stopped the vehicle, he was surprised at what he found.
Spain said the driver had four illegal immigrants in the car with him.
The driver also had business cards advertising the company travels to 48 states, all you have to do is call one of the numbers on the card for pick up.
""If you call it, you can get picked up in Dallas and they will tell you how much. We also found ledgers that the driver had with these individuals names on it and they would have you know they are going to go to San Francisco for 750 dollars," Deputy Spain said.
Deputy Spain said the driver is a U.S. citizen, but as of right now, authorities are not sure where he is from.
"I believe but he had about 7 different kinds of licenses. We don't know which ones exactly were legit or not," Deputy Spain said.
Inside the vehicle, Deputy Spain found an open container and another license plate.
He also found a loose substance, believed to be traces of narcotics.
"A lot of residue all over. There was a white substance in the trunk," Deputy Spain said.
"That car has been used fro transportation of people or drugs in the past," Deputy Spain said.
"This vehicle is in no way where it was stock. When we ran it, it came back as an '09 and it's got over 200,000 miles on it. This vehicle most likely hasn't stopped since day one," a deputy said.
The following night around the same time and same place, Deputy Spain stopped another vehicle for speeding. He found two more illegal immigrants.
"After searching the individual, I felt his wallet and it didn't feel right, and so further inspection we found what we believe to be liquid cocaine," Deputy Spain said.
"If they were not speeding, if they were just traveling 75 and not violating the traffic law they would have gotten through," said Floyd County Sheriff Paul Raissez.
The sheriff said traffickers are looking for alternative routes and law enforcement will be on the lookout.
The Floyd County Sheriff's Office believes this human trafficking ring is based out of Houston and they are going to reach out to law enforcement there. U.S. Border Patrol is also assisting in this investigation.
